Howard Stern Joins the Campaign for Transcendental Meditation in Schools

It’s Baba Booey meets Maharishi.

Howard Stern announced last week that he has accepted an invitation from acclaimed film director David Lynch to appear at the “Change Begins Within” concert to benefit the cause of teaching transcendental meditation to children.

Howard Stern reports that he has practiced transcendental meditation (TM) for many years and that it has helped him to be more successful, happy and relaxed in his life. The neurotic talk radio superstar credits TM with allowing him to keep up his rigorous show schedule while maintaining his sanity.

David Lynch has created his own foundation to promote the cause of providing free Transcendental Meditation education in America’s schools. The foundation’s website states that their goal is to “ensure that any child in America who wants to learn and practice the Transcendental Meditation program can do so.” Lynch and other proponents of TM suggest that students who spend 15-20 meditating each morning experience better concentration in school, better academic performance and lower incidences of depression and anxiety.

Despite Howard Stern’s repeated self-proclamations that he is the “King of All Media,” he rarely makes live appearances in public outside of his radio show. Stern stated that he originally considered declining Lynch’s offer to appear because of his discomfort about appearing in public, but changed his mind because he believes in the cause so strongly. He also stated that Transcendental Meditation helped to reduce his mother’s symptoms of depression.

In fact, Howard Stern’s description of Transcendental Meditation and its benefits made the practice seem so appealing, that even multi-mega-addict Howard Stern show co-host Artie Lange stated he would be willing to try it. Lange has been battling a host of addictions and episodes of deep depression for many years, and recently ignored pleas from his family and friends to enter an inpatient drug rehabilitation center. 15-20 minutes a day of sitting with his eyes closed seems to be on par with the level of commitment that Artie Lange has been able to make to his addiction treatment so far, so there may actually be chance that Lange’s off-the-cuff statement of interest in TM might stick.

The sold-out “Change Begins Within” concert will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Saturday, April 4th. Other celebrity guests that are scheduled to appear include: Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Moby and Eddie Veder. Howard Stern is currently slated to make a brief statement about the benefits he’s experienced from TM and introduce some of the musical performers.

  1. I’ve enjoyed the Transcendental Meditation technique for many years, and I can say that Howard is right on this one. The Transcendental Meditation technique has brought me tremendous benefits in all areas of my life, including greater inner calm, increased mental clarity, better health and just more inner happiness! The efforts of the David Lynch Foundation, to make the Transcendental Meditation technique available to our young people, are to be applauded, and cheers also for all the great stars who are coming together to do this concert to benefit this wonderful purpose.

  2. I think it’s great Howard Stern can make it to the show. I never really listened to Howard Stern but knowing that he supports the David Lynch Foundation and the Quiet Time initiative makes me much more interested. There couldn’t be a better cause than reforming our public schools, and these guys have found the way to do it right.

Hope all goes well for David Lynch and the benefit. Keep up the great work!

  3. Thanks for this article. I had heard the Howard did TM, so now the rumor is confirmed. Since I do TM myself, and will be going to the concert, I look forward to seeing him there. It’s great that so many artists are coming out to support this worthy cause. Well done David Lynch.

  4. Great move, Howard Stern! I’ve been practicing Transcendental Meditation for some years, and for me it’s been an effective tool to release stress, become more balanced, explore who I really AM deep inside – not the product of life-long conventions and conditioning and stress, but the human being underneath all that. Check it out:

  5. Whatever one thinks about Howard Stern, the guy is creative. As a writer, TM has been stoking my creative furnace for 35 years. And keeping my blood pressure at a level that consistently gets a “keep it up” response from my family doc. As far as bringing TM to schoolkids is concerned, school principals who have introduced TM at their schools give it an A++++, according to the reports I have read and heard. Powerful stuff. Transforming schools. The benefit concert is clearly for a sorely needed education reformation in this age of high stress and low performance in schools. Check out the reports at

  6. It’s amazing to hear about all of these famous personalities speaking out about their positive experiences with TM…people you wouldn’t expect to take the time to sit in silence for 20 minutes twice a day.

I have been practicing TM for 33 years and I share Howard Stern’s enthusiasm for the benefits of this simple practice.

  7. As a teacher of Transcendental Meditation I have always said that the practice helps us to grow in happiness and success while maintaining and strenghtening our individuality. Howard Stern is one good example. An offbeat and controversial man who enjoys a pool of silence and calm within himself through his daily practice.
