Education officials are investigating claims that the principal of a high-rated Bronx elementary school led staffers in Buddhist-like chants against eight teachers whose names were included on his “hate list.”
Principal Philip Scharper, of the A-rated PS 24 in Riverdale, also allegedly handed out Buddhist cards as an invitation for the school community to join his spiritual circle, officials confirmed.
“These people gathered together on the weekend and they chanted against these eight people,” said a teacher at the school, who did not want to be identified.
She said Scharper also called staffers into his office to chant during the school day.
“I, as well as a number of parents and teachers, are very concerned about these allegations,” said Unjoo Treback, a vice president of the school’s parent-teacher association.
A Department of Education spokeswoman said the allegations are being investigated.
Scharper, a former ballet dancer, did not respond to requests for comment.
