Devout protest against Buddha Bar

About 200 Buddhist students held a rally outside an outlet of the international franchise Buddha Bar in the Indonesian capital today, accusing it of defaming their religion.

Jakarta is the first city in Southeast Asia to host a Buddha Bar, the hip Paris-based franchise of restaurant/lounges.

“It is impossible to put the exalted name (Buddha) side by side with the word ‘bar’, which is associated with a place for alcohol. That is defamation of religion,” said Eko Nugroho, a protester from a group calling itself the Students Alliance to Reject Buddha Bar.

Avoiding alcohol and other intoxicants is the fifth of the “Five Precepts” that form the basic moral code of Buddhism.

During the peaceful protest, the group prayed with flowers and incense outside the bar that opened late last year in the plush Menteng area of Jakarta and which houses a giant gold Buddha statue on the upper restaurant floor of the bar.

Some held up banners saying “Strip off Buddhist symbols from Buddha Bar” and called for the bar to be shut.

A member of the bar staff said she was not aware of any plan to change the name or alter the interior of the venue.

“Buddha Bar is open as usual,” said the bar staff, who gave her name as Echi.

The congested Indonesian capital of about 10 million people has seen an increasing number of slick nightlife venues open in recent years.

Secular Indonesia is predominantly Muslim, but also has sizeable Christian, Hindu and Buddhist communities.

In the past, supporters of hardline Muslim groups have smashed up bars and nightclubs for opening during the Ramadan fasting month.

  1. Buddhists.

Buddhists in Sri lanka are racist hypocrites. It’s a shame that a popular parisian bar should associate themselves with such racist ignorant people as Singhala Buddhists.
Although the Buddha preached non-violence and toilerance the Singhala Buddhist call a simple land grab a holy war.

  2. Buddha also teaches tolerance & non-violence. The wisdom that Buddha has mentioned is of wise thinking. So as not to offend, or cause harm. Buddha would not be offended himself. Do not become attached to these events. We do not want to become fanatics. Let what is….be. It is the Law of cause & effect. Love all sentient beings, even when they do what we think may not be right. We be mindful more of ourselves & our conduct moreso than of others. Peace be with us always in our hearts & minds. (-;

  3. Pls don’t persuade us with something which you don’t understand clear enough. Alcohol is forbidden in Buddhism. It is mention that we must abstain from taking intoxicants such as drugs, liquor except for heath purposes It is stated as well in the Noble Eightfold Path (Right livelihood), The Buddha mentions four specific activities that harm other beings and that one should avoid for this reason: 1. dealing in weapons, 2. dealing in living beings (including raising animals for slaughter as well as slave trade and prostitution), 3. working in meat production and butchery, and 4. selling intoxicants and poisons, such as alcohol and drugs. And Bar which sells alcohol is forbidden and against Buddhist precepts!!!

  4. i think in Buddhism..Buddha never ask us to judge people..
what is the matter with the alcohol?
    alcohol is just a Drink..
why we guys never things if we open Buddha Bar..
so customer can control themselves to drink too much alcohol..
in 5 principt Buddhism said do not be drunk…that’s not mean we can’t drink alcohol..
    please think wisely..
if you guys said want to close that bar just because of alcohol..
that is not a wise reason..

please do not make Buddhism like a Narrow minded teaches..
    Believe in Karma..
